When I decided to do these style interviews, there were a couple guys I had to interview. Gene was one of them. Gene found my shop from his good buddy, Mike, and is a huge fan of Greyson Clothiers. He’s bought a lot from my shop and other stores and Gene rocks Greyson really well. Gene explained he likes how he can buy Greyson from my shop and I can tailor the clothes before he gets it. Gene is a believer in anything you wear, you should have a good tailor alter it to your build. From pants to shorts to shirts, get them tailored to how you like the clothes to fit. Gene likes his polo sleeves tailored trimmer to his biceps and pants shortened to no break. Gene has great style and he is someone I really think you should look to when needing style inspiration. Enjoy his interview.
In 2000, Gene was working for an advertising agency and Snapple was his client. He got invited to one of their scrabble tournaments and immediately fell in love with the game. Something about being outside and the lush fairways, he was hooked. Gene enjoys playing with good fun people. It doesn’t matter to him if you are really good or not, just don’t take the game too seriously and don’t play slow.
What do you usually wear when you golf? (certain colors, brands, accessories, shorts, etc)
GP: I have 2 different methods when it comes to deciding what to wear golfing. I enjoy wearing proper golf attire – Greyson Clothiers. I love how it fits, the patterns, materials, etc. Never disappointed wearing their looks.
I also believe golf is too pretentious sometimes. So, I enjoy the casual golf vibe. Playing sunset rounds (end of the day) – you are not playing the country club vibe – just good friends and good music. t-shirts, shorts, and casual looks. I especially love wearing Devereux and their casual golf looks.
What brands do you like to wear when you golf?
GP: Mostly Greyson Clothiers and Devereux.
I also like Lululemon t-shirts, Alo t-shirts, shorts and sweatshirts. Nike shoes.
Another brand I like and have been rocking recently is Sugar Loaf Social Club. – I like wearing their hats, visors, t-shirts and accessories – they are creating some really great stuff.
What are 5 things you can find in your golf bag (that you can’t tee off without)?
What brand and style of golf shoes do you love to wear?
GP: Nike, Nike and Nike – I have a shoe fetish and problem and can not not buy new shoes. Any time Nike comes out with new golf shoes – I have to have them.
What are the golf courses you frequent?
GP: Love going to Pebble Beach courses – so special and such a beautiful place.
In Arizona, the typical – TPC, Troon, and Grayhawk.
What courses are on your bucket list?
GP: Cypress Point in Carmel, California. It’s more about the exclusivity of it. The fact I can’t get on it makes me want to get on it. It’s one of the best courses in the world.
What pro golfer do you like their on course style the most?
GP: I don’t know if I have one only because most golfers who are sponsored wear the same look every week. Also, the same golfers sponsored by the same brand, wear the same look on different days. It’s hard to like a golfer’s style when they are not unique and everyone is wearing the same thing.
What is one golf tip that improved your golf game?
GP: It was more of a realization and less of a tip. I realized what’s great about golfers is everyone is actually rooting for you. When you are teeing off or coming in on 18 like at Pebble or a course with an outdoor patio, everyone is watching you. It’s natural for me to think to hit the round well because if I don’t people will laugh. But it’s not true. You actually hear people rooting for you. If you hit a good shot, people clap and cheer. If a bad shot, they tell you they have done that too. That’s what is so great about golfers and helped me love the game even more.
What is your go to drink while on the course?
GP: Mostly Gatorade. On the 19th hole, give me a Pacifico. I try not to drink too much.
What is your must play course for out of towners?
GP: In Arizona, everyone must play Quintero – its phenomenal.
In the Bay Area, everyone should experience a Pebble Beach Golf Course in their lifetime. (Pebble Beach, Spy Glass and Spanish Bay).
