GOLF APPAREL “AIN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE AND THAT’S A GOOD THING

01/28/2022

A modern, fresh look for golf apparel has surfaced, inspired by significant lifestyle changes, some due to Covid, as well as a new younger generation and the increased diversity of golf newbies.  The result is a cultural shift, with apparel reflecting a younger, more diverse audience.  In addition, the very essence of the sport addresses two ways to stop the spread of Covid:  it’s outdoors and socially distanced.  This “happy accident” has spurred an uptick in participation, so I wanted to give you a sneak peek at some of the golf apparel we’ll be carrying at Q. Contrary this year.

Golf Apparel – Key Elements

Three key elements distinguish the fresh look of Spring 2022 golf apparel.

  1. Retro-resort vibes and clubhouse design details are the look of the day. To update traditional items, a vintage color palette with bold stripes and prints that resemble resort aesthetics are being used.
  2. Look for more sustainably produced natural fibers that contain performance properties for all-day comfort, some with inherent antibacterial, UV protection and deodorizing qualities. Two examples include Tencel and Abacell, a blend of cotton and plant-based fibers.
  3. Golf wear has really become lifestyle wear.  More pieces are being designed to be worn beyond the golf course that can easily be used for other social activities.

Golf Apparel Can Also Be a Bit Casual

Slogan t-shirts, a casual favorite off the golf course, are becoming more accepted on the links.   However, messaging has changed, rejecting the upper-class snootiness of the traditional members’ club.  More inclusive messaging and golfing graphics in primaries and classic preppy colors will be staples this season.

Classic and Resort Polo – The Essentials

The classic polo returns with a focus on details.  The use of contrast trims and embroidery along with zippers or buttons that fasten the neckline make for a sporty message.  Performance fabrics provide all-day comfort with UVS or UVB ray-blocking and are important for long days on the course.  The color palette is upgraded using vintage colors such as palm leaf green accents.  Motifs with character push the boundaries of the plain, traditional white polo.

The resort polo has been updated for a more contemporary look focusing on shape, fit, color and fabric detail.  With a clubhouse theme, retro styling, and new stripe prints, the 2022 resort polo drives home the vacation message.  It’s a must-have in your golf wardrobe, and, of course, Q. Contrary will carry it in a variety of performance fabrics.

Knitted Wests And Golf Shorts In Golf Apparel

Knitted vests??  Yes, knitted vests are a rising trend, which has been established as a golf collection essential in the sport and delivers on the preppy, clubhouse aesthetic.  Choose RWS (responsible wool standard) or waste recycled wool options with recycled nylon for durability and shape retention.  In addition, select breathable panels and textural interest such as ribbing.  Q. Contrary will carry them in collegiate colors and motifs that speak to the new preppy styling.

Golf shorts in new styles take on a resort-inspired look and resemble classic pool shorts rather than the traditional tailored golf wear.  Volume and stretch are important for functionality and enable freedom of movement.  Golf shorts that are quick-drying and sweat-wicking are especially important if you want to wear them to a social hour.

Hope you enjoyed this little preview of what’s instore for golf apparel in 2022.  At Q, Contrary, we’ll be carrying a variety of the items just discussed.  Check out my shop in Phoenix at 3168 East Camelback Road or visit my online store.  I’d love to help you select some new items for your golf wardrobe.
